Public is open to new revenue stream to pay for quality four-year old preschool program

Honolulu, HI – Good Beginnings Alliance (GBA) and the Be My Voice! HawaiʻiLeadership Council announced today the results of an independent, local poll conducted by Ward Research showing that 74 percent of voters support free or partly free preschool for all children.

HONOLULU -- The Good Beginnings Alliance stands firmly behind President Barack Obama’s plans for federal investment in early learning from age zero to five, a plan that guarantees preschool for all 4-year-olds in the nation. His support also gives Hawai‘i another reason to establish a state-funded preschool for 4-year-olds across the islands.

Governor Abercrombie signs Senate Bill 1093 in ceremony today

Honolulu, Hawai‘i -- The Good Beginnings Alliance today applauded Gov. Neil Abercrombie for signing the School Readiness legislation into law.

“School Readiness is an important first step toward assuring that families with children in Hawai‘i have access to preschool,” said Deborah Zysman, Good Beginnings Alliance Executive Director. “We are elated that the foundation for a state-funded preschool system is now in place.”

Public support for free or partially free preschool for all 4-year-olds in Hawai’i jumped by 8 percentage points from last year, according to a recent poll of registered voters commissioned by the Good Beginnings Alliance.

Starting August 2014, a child must be 5 on or before July 31 to enter kindergarten. The change is a result of Act 178, Session Laws of Hawaii 2012.
