  • Prevent Child Abuse - Hawaiʻi Chapter

Hawaiʻi Children’s Action Network (HCAN) is our state’s chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America and we are launching a movement. The mission of Prevent Child Abuse Hawaiʻi is to advance policies and services that prevent harm before it happens.

What are we working on?

We're committed to ensuring that families have the support they need—not just to get by, but to thrive. Our 2025 policy priority, "Separating Poverty from Neglect," focuses on investing in community-based resources and strengthening family support systems.

Too many families in our state live paycheck to paycheck or are just a few paychecks away from being able to make ends meet. The high cost of living leaves many families without emergency savings to fall back on. This forces parents into making impossible choices between rent, child care, utilities, transportation, groceries, new clothing, and other essentials, which can make it difficult to consistently meet their children’s needs.

Instead of relying on child welfare involvement as a safety net—something it was never designed to be—we must provide direct support to families and invest in community-based resources. By building a continuum of support and meeting families where they are, we can ensure children and families have not only what they need to survive but the stability to thrive.

Get involved with Prevent Child Abuse Hawaiʻi

Are you a parent or caregiver who cares deeply about children’s safety and well-being? Have you navigated the child welfare system–this includes the foster care system, family court? We would like to hear from you! Your experiences and insights can help shape policies to truly support families. Sign up below and get involved today!

Families in Hawaiʻi deserve to "have what they need, when they need it, in the communities where they live... before a crisis occurs—then children can thrive.”
