JOB SUMMARY:  Children’s Health Coordinator

Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network (HCAN) is an independent, nonpartisan children’s policy and advocacy non-profit organization. Our mission is to build a united voice educating and advocating for Hawai‘i’s children. HCAN engages, educates, empowers and mobilizes families, community leaders, and policy makers to improve the health, education, safety, economic security and development of Hawaii’s children. We provide information on child well-being, stimulate dialogue on children's issues, and promote accountability and action.

The Children’s Health Coordinator (Coordinator) will act in a leadership role in multifaceted work with staff and key partners. This will include working with and helping to build effective coalitions and networks, coordination of policy research, strategic planning, program management and community engagement with diverse organizations and community members.  The ideal candidate is comfortable in an extremely fast-paced and dynamic environment and is a self-starter who has excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. The Coordinator is an effective communicator, can build relationships with ease, is passionate about equity, and has a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a group.

Essential Job Functions

1. Coalition and Network Coordination (Primary Responsibility)

The Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate and provide support for multiple coalitions and networks. At hire, the primary focus will be on children’s oral health and family violence prevention.
  • Convene and facilitate meetings with community stakeholders and organizations. Prepare meeting minutes, serve as liaison among coalition/network members.
  • Network and build positive relationships with community representatives, organizations, coalitions and decision makers in children’s health.
  • Work to identify opportunities to form and promote strategic alliances among local and state level networks
  • Provide coalitions and networks with staffing, ensuring responsiveness to partner requirements, inputs, and concerns. This includes timely material preparation, agenda development, minutes, program/grant development, work plan execution, and the completion of required group follow-up
  • Manage coalition/network communications;
  • Maintain and grow existing membership;
  • Schedule meetings, draft meeting agendas, take notes, and follow up with members on identified tasks;
  • Increase community engagement, and educate the public on relevant children’s health issues;
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with community leaders, advocates, non-profit agencies, and policymakers; and
  • Represent HCAN before state and local constituency groups and policymakers and on state and community workgroups, taskforces and commissions as directed by supervisor.

2. Policy Research, Writing, and Communications

 The Coordinator will

  • Conduct literature reviews and policy research on public health issues that are relevant to children’s health;
  • Develop policy briefs, reports and other materials such as factsheets;
  • Prepare testimony;
  • Develop and write content for HCAN website, social media and newsletter to ensure accurate and current content in focus areas;
  • Develop and deliver presentations to professional, community and student groups.
  • Respond to requests for information on a broad range of children’s issues; and
  • Keep up-to-date on children’s health issues at the state and federal levels as well as best practice models in other states.

3. Program Management

The Coordinator will:

  • Be responsible for all project management for children’s health as well as for the completion of grant deliverables, including evaluation and reporting;
  • Manage project timelines, activities, documentation, and deliverables while maintaining alignment with multi-sector partner objectives and grant / project work plan requirements; and
  • Develop proposals in response to identified grant opportunities.

4. General 

The Coordinator will:

  • Participate in local, state, regional and national conferences, meetings, webinars and any special technical assistance opportunities as appropriate;
  • Participate in HCAN staff meetings and support the overall work of the organization;
  • Work with consultants and community partners as needed; and
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
  • At least 2 years of working in Hawai‘i.
  • At least 3 years of organizing, coalition building, and/or policy advocacy
  • A strong commitment to health equity and social justice.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, policy analysis and research skills.
  • Knowledge and experience utilizing membership management software.
  • Experience managing grants and projects, writing reports.
  • Great organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively within structured and time sensitive environments. Experience creating and managing work plans and time-sensitive deliverables and deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to network and develop effective relationships. An ability to connect with many different kinds of organizations and constituency groups and experience working with diverse and marginalized communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and to work proactively, both independently and in teams.
  • Great passion for the mission, vision, and values of Hawaii Children’s Action Network able to promote both internally and externally.
  • Capacity to work in a fast-paced and changing work environment, including ability to use initiative and independent problem solving.
  • Proficient in utilizing MSOffice platform, PowerPoint, desktop publishing programs, and social media tools.
  • Driver’s license and access to an automobile.
  • Ability to travel inter-island and to the mainland if needed.

  • Works in partnership with other team members both in the agency and in the community.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with public and private agencies and other community organizations.
  • Possesses advanced computer skills in a variety of computer applications and reporting tools including, but not limited to, MS Access, Excel, Powerpoint and Word
