HCAN is hiring a full-time, term-limited Project Coordinator for WIC Language Access who will assist our Director of Research and Economic Policy (Project Manager) to implement grant-funded activities for the Hawaiʻi WIC Community Innovation and Outreach Project (WIC CIAO). The project will focus on increasing WIC awareness, enrollment, and retention for Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Filipino families across the state. The Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating activities and collaborating with partners and stakeholders to successfully achieve project goals in accordance with federal guidelines. The project is grant-funded through October 31, 2024.
WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. This federal nutrition program connects eligible individuals to critical nutrition resources and support. In Hawaiʻi, WIC provides healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding counseling and referrals for nearly 26,000 participants, including 5,700 pregnant and postpartum individuals, 5,800 infants up to 12 months, and 14,500 children under age 5. In 2020, only 55 percent of all eligible individuals in Hawaiʻi participated in WIC, equating to a shortfall of more than 21,000 individuals.
The Hawaiʻi WIC CIAO project will produce culturally and linguistically appropriate WIC outreach materials for Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and Filipino families. The materials will be shared widely with local WIC clinics, grassroots groups, and community coalitions. HCAN will be partnering with Hawaiʻi Coalition for Immigrant Rights, Next Gen Hawaiʻi, WIC Waimānalo Health Center, other local WIC clinics, and the State WIC office to develop materials and conduct digital as well as in-person outreach to families in target communities.
