Keiki First: Finding Hawaiʻi’s North Star for Children, a Cross-Sector Conversation

Purpose

Hawaiʻi Children's Action Network (HCAN), in partnership with families, government, and sector leaders, initiated a statewide effort to put keiki first by navigating collective voices answering three guiding questions:

1. What makes Hawaiʻi a great place to raise keiki?
2.
What makes it hard to raise keiki in Hawaiʻi?
3. How can Hawaiʻi do better?

Core Components and Outcome

There are four core components:

1. Cross-Sector Engagement
2. Community Voice
3. Cultural Anchoring
4. Synthesis and Analysis

= Defining the North Star, a shared vision for Hawaiʻi as the best place in the nation to raise keiki and the development of a concise guide articulating: Hawaiʻi's strengths supporting keiki, opportunities to strengthen or transform, and priority levers for systems change.

The outcome will be a shared, community-informed North Star guide of HCAN's programmatic priorities, policy agenda, and a long-term system changing strategy, while elevating parent voices and parent power.
