HCAN Statement on School Shooting in Texas

HONOLULU, May 24, 2022 — Hawaiʻi Children’s Action Network released the following statement, attributable to Executive Director Deborah Zysman:

“Our hearts are broken. We mourn for the students and staff of Robb Elementary School and all those families whose lives are forever changed by yet another horrific attack.

For families with young children, we’ve compiled some tips from national experts on how to discuss violence and traumatic events, and how to help them cope. Click here to access those tips on talking with children about violence and traumatic events.

We are also enraged that these tragedies continue to occur. Children’s lives should not be at risk every time they enter a classroom. Yet today’s violence marks at least the 30th shooting at a K-12 school in 2022, according to CNN

Ending this violence will take all of us. We need everyone to step up and take action — even us in Hawaiʻi. Keep up the pressure by donating to groups like Moms Demand Action that are fighting to get politicians into office who will finally pass the gun safety laws we need. HCAN is also here to help any parents or community members who want to get involved and create a positive impact in their communities — email us at [email protected].”
